Voluntary Warden Programme of Events 2018

        

Tues 5th

June

Breeding Birds of Newton Burrows (Beach Road car park 6.30pm).

An evening’s bird with a local expert during Wales Nature Week.  Please bring binoculars if you have them. Meet at Beach Road carpark at 6.30pm (walk will approximately last for 1-2 hours).

Sun 10th June

Sand dune survivors at Kenfig NNR.

Get to know some of the specialised plants, which live in this hostile habitat during Wales Nature week.

Sat 16th  June

Breeding Birds of Lock’s Common.

Don’t you know your skylarks from your stonechats?  Come along to our Spring bird walk and all will be revealed!  Please bring binoculars if you have them.

Balsam Bashing at Merthyr Mawr

Come along and help pull some Himalayan balsam at one of the County Borough’s flagship sand dunes. All day event. Please register before attending as car parking is limited. Meet 9.30a.m. for a 10.00am

Flowers on Locks Common

Come and see squinancywort and dog's mercury amongst a wide range of plants and explore the flowering plants of this scarce limestone habitat.

Beachblitz. We are looking to spruce up the Newton coast before the summer season

Sat 21st July

Dry stone walling weekend.  Meeting time and venue TBC

An opportunity to have a go at this traditional skill. All day event. Times and meeting place. TBC

 

Sat  & Sun 11th & 12th  August

Dry stone walling weekend at Meeting time and venue TBC

This weekend can either be an introduction to this traditional skill, or an opportunity to polish your skills if you attended the weekend earlier in the year. All day event. Times and meeting place TBC

 

Sat 8th September

Year of the Sea Beach Clean @  Sker Beach

In support of the all Wales beach clean campaign.  Meet at Kenfig Reserve Centre at 9.30a.m. for a 10.00a.m start . Until 1.00p.m.

Sat 29th September

Coppicing at Tremains Wood

Tremains Wood is important woodland that benefits form this traditional form of management.  Meet at the Triangle Brackla at 9.30a.m. All day event.

Sat 13th  October

Coppicing at Frog Pond wood

Have a go at some traditional woodland management and build a habitat pile! All day event.  Meet at Kenfig Reserve Centre at 9.30a.m. All day event.

27th October

Hedge laying.  Wildlife Trust Reserve, Parc Slip.

Come and try your hand at this dying art, but book early as numbers are limited. All day event. Times and meeting place TBC.

November

The scourge of the sea buckthorn at Newton Burrows

Come and tackle the sea buckthorn which spreads rapidly over the dunes smothering the diverse sand dune flora. Tools and training provided. Meet at Beach Road Car park at 9.00am (event will go on until approximately lunchtime).

Sat  17th November

Hedge laying.  Wildlife Trust Reserve, Parc Slip.

Another Come and try your hand at this dying art, but book early numbers are limited. All day event. Times and meeting place TBC

November

Coppicing at Tremains Wood

A great way to start the new year with this traditional woodland management.  Meet at the Triangle Brackla at 9.30a.m. All day event.

All events start at 10.00 am until 12.00pm unless otherwise specified.

For Locks Common events, meet at the lifeguard station. For Newton Burrows meet at Beach Road car park.  For Sker Beach event meet at Kenfig Nature Reserve Centre

In addition to the above we will be other volunteer events every including further management days at our Local Nature Reserves.  Works will include litter picks, maintenance and species recording and will take place on Fridays unless otherwise indicated.  The meeting points for the LNRs are:

Tremains Wood -Meet at the Triangle Shopping Centre

Frog Pond Wood - Meet at Frog Pond

Craig y Parcau - Meet at entrance to Craig y Parcau
